Preparation + Opportunity + Abundance (and a Special Offer)

Motherhood, Depression and Sex Panel at Catalyst Con East with Jessica Cary, Anain Bjorkquist and Miko Technogeisha

Over the past two months, I have sat on and hosted panels at two conferences.  I got to speak about topics that I am deeply passionate about, topics that once upon a time I thought I would never have the credibility or the balls to talk about in public --  in front of people, with a mic in my hand, feeling at home and completely unafraid.   (When I worked in Corporate America, I hated public speaking!)

Now that I am doing this work and I've committed myself to the process, opportunities pop up unexpectedly and I have to be ready to step up to the plate.  I never know what email will pop up in my inbox, who I'll meet or what I'll be asked to do.  I dedicated the #30Layers30days challenge in March to the concept of 'leveling up' because I know that all of us have goals that scare us and that sneaky temptation to sabotage ourselves when opportunities intimidate us.

When dreams start to manifest, the pressure increases and the urge to self-sabotage is so real.  Fear of success.  That is all it is.

I am currently hosting my first comprehensive online writing workshop and during one of our chats, I shared how my writing practice has given me confidence to not only know what I have to offer and why, but to articulate myself to others with conviction.  I look back at this post from April 2013 where I talked about not knowing myself enough to speak up, letting people treat me any kind of way, and feeling embarrassed and uncertain about my voice.  The road has been anything but easy, but damn it feels good to look back and see progress, even when I know the journey is always upward and never ending.  I'm so thankful and I'm here for it.  Every bit of it.

Building a loyal and connected following at Blogger Week Unconference with Tyece Wilkins, Erica Nichole and Shefon Nachelle

And since I am here, and you are here, it's important that you know how connected we are.  I am always pleasantly surprised to meet my readers and feel like I know them and they know me.  Like off the bat, we have something in common.  Certain pretenses just don't exist and we can speak a shared language and have meaningful conversations.  So in the spirit of meaningful conversations and getting to the heart of the matter, I have a few thoughts to share with you on preparation, opportunity and abundance.

Preparation

Although I didn't know it at the time, picking up my pen and pad six years ago after years of avoidance was a defining and pivotal moment in my life.  Writing has brought me home to myself and taught me about self-acceptance, expression and how integral they both are to my well-being.  Whatever it is you are doing or want to do with your life; it is the rituals, routines and daily practices you commit to that will slowly but surely guide you through your journey.  As someone who is typically slow to speak up and needs a long time to process things, writing everyday strengthens my voice so when opportunities comes up, I am ready and eager to say who I am, what I'm about and how I can add value in my own unique way.

Opportunity

And while I have my days where I sit and wonder --  what's next, when will this and that happen, and why hasn't this and the other happened yet --  I have learned the value and freedom in creating my own opportunities.  Sometimes you have to ask.  Sometimes you have to persist.  You have to go outside of your comfort zone and learn how to strategize and position yourself.  And it feels weird at first!   But when the time comes and the nerves and the adrenaline come, you can fall back on what you know.  You have practiced.  You've studied and you're ready.  Without the dedication to expression and believing that your unique perspective matters, the old voices can sneak in.  Telling you that you're not ready, that someone's already done it and that they can do it better.  You know, that scarcity mentality.  The opposite of abundance.

Abundance

Self-discovery and creativity go hand in hand.  In order to access hidden parts of yourself and become more aware, you have to recognize and silence the voice of your ego (the doubts, the inner critic, the excuses)  and start listening to your spirit, letting your true self pour out.  When you surrender to your authentic self, and how you want to exist in the world, the blocks that once kept you from feeling creative fall away and you become ripe with ideas.  You know that when you dare to be yourself in every situation, no matter what happens, there is abundance in every outcome.  You make moves with the understanding that what is for you is for you and there is always more where that came from.
